RECAP
  1. VISUAL ANALYSIS
    • Re-upload the design work (images and information) from Task 1.
    • Based on the Visual Analysis steps in MyTime, a 300–400 word visual analysis of the artwork will be conducted. Including:
      • Observations
      • Analysis
      • Interpretation
    • If references are used, they must be listed at the end.

  2. IDEATION
    • Based on the selected design artwork, create three inspired design idea sketches.
    • Each idea should include a 30–50 word description and explanation of the design rationale.
    • Include feedback from your lecturer in your blog post.

VISUAL ANALYSIS

Fig. 1.1 - Light is the meaning of everything by Osot-酒保

Title: 光就是一切的意义 Light is the meaning of everything
Designer's name: Osot-酒保
Year: 12 September 2025
Size: 7680 × 4078
Medium:  Adobe Photoshop
Source:

Observation
This artwork primarily employs a horizontal composition. In the center of the image, a young boy stands with outstretched arms, forcefully pushing against a massive bronze door. The surrounding environment is mysterious and dim, the huge bronze door adorned with intricate and enigmatic totemic patterns. The door is slightly ajar, and a beam of dazzling light shines through the crack, illuminating the previously dark space. The smoke surrounding the door and the boy gradually converges, seemingly transforming into blurry human figures, as if assisting the boy in pushing open the heavy door. The entire painting is dominated by dark tones such as black, gray, and brown, creating a striking contrast with the intense white light emanating from the crack, thus generating a solemn, mysterious, and dramatic atmosphere.

Analysis
This design uses the intense light streaming through the crack in the door to create a striking contrast between the bright light and the surrounding darkness, while simultaneously establishing a clear visual focal point in the center of the image. The small figure standing before the door further emphasizes the immense scale of the surrounding environment, making the entire space appear even grander and more awe-inspiring. At the same time, the light filtering through the crack not only highlights the subject but also enhances the dramatic tension and spatial depth of the image.

The overall composition is roughly symmetrical, maintaining visual stability and balance. The designer also cleverly uses smoke and light effects to guide the viewer's eye gradually towards the central figure and the massive door, creating a natural visual flow. These visual elements collectively construct a clear visual hierarchy, leading the viewer first to notice the intense light, then the figure standing before the door, and finally to observe the details of the surrounding environment, thus forming a guiding visual narrative.

Interpretation
This artwork tells a story set in a world long shrouded in darkness and isolated from reality. In this world, a young boy overcomes numerous hardships to finally push open the door to the real world, welcoming light he has never experienced before. However, this moment is not accidental; it is the result of his people's perseverance in darkness for over three thousand years, enduring countless sacrifices.

The smoke surrounding the door and the boy gradually transforms into blurry human figures, seemingly symbolizing those long-deceased members of his people. Their souls and unwavering will seem to still be watching over him, invisibly assisting the boy in pushing open the heavy, massive bronze door. This scene not only expresses the continuation of history and memory but also symbolizes the inheritance of collective will and hope.

Therefore, this work symbolizes not only hope and transformation but also exploration and the unknown. Behind the opened door may lie new opportunities or hidden dangers. The dark environment surrounding the figures further creates a mysterious atmosphere, and the strong contrast between light and shadow highlights the light emerging from the crack in the door. The work not only recreates a key historical turning point in the narrative, but also profoundly interprets the symbolic meaning of "light" through a dynamic visual narrative, conveying the themes of exploration, change, and moving towards a new future.

IDEATION

SKETCHES 1

Fig. 2.1 - Sketches 1_JPEG (11/3/2026)

This artwork is a modified version based on the original composition template. It is inspired by the “Ten-Year Promise” scene from the novel The Lost Tomb, depicting the moment when Zhang Qiling walks out of the Bronze Gate. The contrast between the light from the door and the dark surroundings symbolises reunion and hope after a long wait.

SKETCHES 2

Fig. 2.2 - Sketches 2_JPEG (11/3/2026)

This artwork continues the contrast between the dark environment and strong light used in the original design, creating a tense and mysterious atmosphere. It is inspired by a scene from the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, where Wei Wuxian stands in the Burial Mounds, expressing the character’s loneliness and struggle in a desperate situation.

SKETCHES 3

Fig. 2.3 - Sketches 3_JPEG (11/3/2026)

This artwork adopts a fully symmetrical and minimalist composition, using numerous vertical lines to create strong visual guidance. The staircase and converging perspective lines lead the viewer’s eye naturally toward the central light source, creating a solemn and surreal atmosphere. The composition emphasises spatial scale and a sense of divinity, depicting a moment of the figure walking toward the unknown and the light.

FEEDBACK

Week 05
The sketch should be further refined and accompanied by a brief description of the design.

Week 06
Sketch 3 deviates slightly from the theme, while Sketches 1 and 2 show stronger overall development. Among them, Sketch 1 is recommended for further refinement, and the chain elements could be emphasised more to make them stand out.

REFLECTIONS

In this assignment, we once again applied the method of visual analysis to observe, analyse, and interpret the selected artwork. During this process, I carefully examined the design and was once again impressed by the artist’s effective use of light. Through this analysis, I gained a clearer understanding of the importance of composition and lighting in visual storytelling.

During the sketch development stage, I initially encountered some difficulties, particularly in figuring out how to apply these visual elements to my own design. Therefore, in my first design idea, I extracted the most important element from the original artwork – the “opening door.” This element reminded me of scenes from novels I had read, which later inspired the ideas for my subsequent designs.

Overall, this assignment allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of visual analysis and helped me become more aware of how design principles can be consciously applied in my own creative process.
